States serve a substantial number of people with dementia and their family caregivers in their Aging Networks and LTSS systems. Serving this population effectively involves accommodating the needs of a population that, in addition to memory loss, experiences a variety of physical, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms resulting from dementia, along with other medical conditions. In model dementia-capable systems, programs are tailored to the unique needs of people with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias, and their caregivers.

2013 Tribal Initiative for MFP

This is information on the CMS Money Follows the Person (MFP) Tribal Initiative (TI). The TI will offer existing MFP states and tribes the necessary resources to build sustainable community-based long-term services and supports (LTSS) specifically for Indian country. Through a supplemental budget request, MFP grantees and tribal partners may use the TI to address disparities, improve access, and advance the development of the infrastructure required to implement Medicaid community-based LTSS for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN).

AARP Report Meeting the Needs of Diverse Family Caregivers

AARP conducted qualitative research using a series of focus groups with Hispanic and African American family caregivers, nurses and social workers across the nation. This brief report: defines who these family caregivers are and recognizes that many are taking on significant responsibilities as part of the “new normal” for family caregiving; explores the needs of diverse family caregivers; and offers solutions for improving collaboration and communication between the families and the professionals.

AHRQ Website Helps Hispanics Communicate More with Their Doctors

The Department of Health and Human Services Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) recently launched, Conozca las preguntas, a new Spanish-language website that encourages Hispanics to get more involved in their health care and provides tips to improve patient-provider communication. AHRQ data show that the proportion of Hispanics who report having poor communication with their health providers widening. The data also show that Hispanics are significantly less likely than non-Hispanic whites to see a doctor
at least once a year even when they have health insurance, and they also are much less likely to get important screening tests for diseases, such as diabetes and cancer. The website also features downloadable public service announcements (PSAs) from AHRQ’s nationwide campaign with the Ad Council.

HIPAA Privacy Consumer Brochures in Eight Languages

The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has posted on its health information privacy website two consumer brochures, Privacy and Your Health Information and Your Health Information Privacy Rights, in eight languages: Chinese, Korean, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese and English. These brochures educate health care consumers about the HIPAA Privacy Rule. In addition, OCR has posted information in these languages about how to file a privacy complaint, along with translated privacy complaint forms.

Kidney Disease: What African Americans Need To Know

The National Kidney Disease Education Program (NKDEP), an initiative of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has created an educational brochure tailored specifically for African Americans at risk for kidney disease. The brochure explains the connection between diabetes, high blood pressure, and kidney disease, and encourages those at risk to talk to their health care providers about getting tested.
