Aging and Disability Resource Centers, designed to be coordinated entry points of services for older adults and people with disabilities, can become active in "mobility management" activities at the individual and systems levels to improve transportation options. This issue brief will assist ADRCs in identifying relevant resources and stakeholders that can assist with the provision of transportation coordination services to consumers, and it will demonstrate how ADRCs can connect with existing transportation coalitions in their communities to pursue broader changes in the transportation system.

Flyer for Florida's Alternative Transportation Options

The University of Florida’s Institute for Mobility, Activity and Participation developed the Florida Senior Safety Resource Center (FSSRC), a database containing over 700 transportation services. This user directed information for seniors, or persons with disabilities, addresses the need to find appropriate, acceptable and affordable transportation within their local communities. These services range from highly organized to very flexible and provide various levels of assistance, throughout all of Florida’s 67 counties.

Final Report of United We Ride National Dialogue

In 2009 more than 3,500 stakeholders from 50 U.S. states and DC who participated in the United We Ride National Dialogue were asked this question. More than 6,000 transit systems nationwide provide some form of service to older riders, from reduced fares to use of low-floor vehicles to personalized training sessions. Report on Creating Livable Communities

Creating Livable Communities presents six strategies that can be implemented in the U.S. to promote community living for people with disabilities. Each strategy is illustrated by actual initiatives being practiced at federal and state levels. The report also contains eight recommendations for the legislative and executive branches of the federal government and states, so that they can proactively adopt strategies and policies that invest in livable community outcomes.

The call, which took place on January 6th, 2005, focused on accessing transportation for ADRC customers. After an initial update by AoA on federal transportation initiatives, this call featured a facilitated discussion by representatives from Georgia. Speakers included Mary Leary (AoA) as well as Lauren Burby (Georgia ADRC), Leigh Ann Trainer and Rich Devine (Georgia Department of Human Resources), and Robin Phillips (Washington Department of Transportation). The major goals for the call were to share peer-to-peer knowledge, provide an update on some current AoA research and United We Ride's transportation coordination efforts to date and begin a dialogue associated with this topic.
