Making a Profit in a Non-Profit World

The national vision for the ADRC initiative is that it serve as a highly visible and trusted place in the community where people of all income levels can turn for information, assistance, and support in making their own decisions about long-term care. Within this vision, there may be opportunities to offer some services for a fee. Offering ADRC services to consumers and their families who have the ability to pay for services benefits the individuals who need services, offers the organization the capability to serve more low-income individuals, and builds greater organizational stability and independence. But how can a non-profit organization justify making a “profit?” This training and presentation will cover topics including: defining the private market, examining non-profit status and assumptions, determining the true cost of services provided and how to design payment structures within a good business plan, and provide examples of fee-for-service programs.

Audience: (ADRC) managers, program planners and directors who are responsible for planning service delivery within their organization.

Instructor: Robert Littke - Senior Services, Inc., Kalamazoo, Michigan

  • Robert Littke, PhD, previously worked for more than 12 years in radio and television broadcasting. Later in his professional career he served for six years as the Executive Director of the St. Joseph County Commission on Aging in Centreville, Michigan before becoming President and CEO of Senior Services, Inc. in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Senior Services provides life-sustaining services to over 9,000 homebound senior citizens in five counties in Southern Michigan. Senior Services, Inc. has been called "The largest and most comprehensive organization serving the elderly and disabled anywhere in America." Dr. Littke has also served as the President of the Michigan Directors of Services to the Aging and was appointed by the Governor to the Michigan Commission on Services to the Aging. He attended Liberty University and the University of New York before earning a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology in 1985 from Columbia Pacific University. Dr. Littke speaks nationally on many topics, including the development of non-profit business models and "fee-for-services" systems. As demands grow for services that non-profit organizations offer and traditional funding sources cannot meet the growing needs, many organizations seek his advice on the development of "fee for services" systems for their own organizations. This simple concept reaches out to those who have the ability to pay for services, and expands the organization’s ability to reach more clients of all income levels. Dr. Littke has been called upon by nationally known organizations including Scripps Gerontology Center at the University of Miami, the U.S. Administration on Aging, numerous State Offices on Aging, and many service organizations to share this proven business concept.
