On December 12, 2012, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) and Veterans Health Administration (VHA) hosted an educational Webinar focused on the Veterans Directed Home & Community Based Services (VD-HCBS) Program. Topics discussed during the Webinar include the VD-HCBS Sustainability Project, VAMC Case-Mix Budget Tool and an update on the growth of VD-HCBS. A link to the presentation used during the Webinar is provided.
The second quarterly educational call was hosted on March 13, 2013. Topics discussed include program status and future directions; Veteran-directed respite care; and a presentation by Jill Snider-Meyer (Milwaukee VAMC) and Lisa Drouin (Greater Wisconsin Agency on Aging Resources) on VD-HCBS cost-effectiveness/patient satisfaction as compared with tranditional Community Nursing Home care and program expansion under the Enhanced Options Counseling (Part A) grant.
The third quarterly educational call on 6/12/2013 featured speakers from Ohio's Chillicothe VAMC and the District 7 Area Agency for Aging.
The next quarterly education call is planned for 9/18/2013.

Medicaid FFP Basics

In 2012 the Administration on Community Living (ACL), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Veterans Health Administration released an Enhanced Options Counseling funding opportunity. Attachment G (Medicaid Support for ADRC Functions) of that announcement described how Medicaid funds can be used to support some Aging and Disability Resource Center Initiative (ADRC) functions. This document builds off of Attachment G, provides practical information for states developing strategies to secure Medicaid administrative funding, and defines key terms.

AARP Keeping Up with the Times: Supporting Family Caregivers with Workplace Leave Policies

Behavioral Health Needs Assessment Toolkit

The Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) developed this toolkit to help states’ service agencies better assess and meet the behavioral health needs of their communities. It provides states with detailed information on the latest behavioral health statistics as well as step-by-step instructions to generate projections related to what areas will need to be addressed in the future.

It looks at determinants, actions that can affect the future health of the population, and outcomes, what has already occurred either through death or disease. On 5/30/2013, Jim Varpness and Kathleen Otte (Regional ACL Administrators) and Kevin Foley and Greg Link (ACL Central Office) presented to the VA network on "Partnering to Serve Veterans & Family Caregivers." They provided an overview of ACL and the Aging and Disability Network, key ACL program areas, and opportunities for collaboration between the VHA and the Aging and Disability Network.
