Providing Services for People with Dementia Who Live Alone: Issue brief 
Source: TAEThe ADSSP National Resource Center reviewed the available literature and conducted interviews with people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias who live alone, caregivers and health care and social service professionals to obtain their views about the needs of people and potentially effective ways to meet those needs. It also describes programs that have been tested by community agencies to reach and help people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias who live alone and discusses related public policy and practice implications.

Seniors and people with disabilities are highly vulnerable to health and safety risks associated with all types of emergencies and disasters. Reports and studies following Hurricane Katrina noted that seniors, people with disabilities and individuals with mental illness were often at greater risk than others during crises because their needs were not considered in emergency planning, response or recover efforts. ADRCs, as providers of information and assistance services, are well-positioned to take active roles in emergency preparedness and response. This issue brief describes the role of ADRCs in planning for, responding to and recovering from emergencies. It provides checklists and resource information that will assist ADRCs prepare their staff and facilities for emergency situations as well as with meeting the specialized needs of seniors and people with all types of disabilities in crisis situations.

National Legal Resource Center

The Administration on Aging funds the National Legal Resource Center (NLRC) to serve as a centralized access point for a national legal assistance support system serving professionals and advocates working in legal and aging services networks, and advances the following the primary objectives of: (1) supporting the leadership, knowledge, and systems capacity of states, legal services providers, area agencies on aging, ADRCs, and other organizations serving older persons in order to enhance the quality, cost effectiveness, and accessibility of legal assistance, and elder rights programs provided to older persons, and (2) supporting demonstration projects designed to expand or improve the delivery of legal assistance and elder rights protections to older persons with social or economic needs.

DCoE Outreach Center for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury

The Defense Centers of Excellence have opened a 24-hour outreach center to provide information and referrals to military service members, veterans, their families and others with questions about psychological health and traumatic brain injury. The outreach center can assist with everything from routine requests for information about psychological health and traumatic brain injury, to questions about symptoms a caller is having, to helping a caller find appropriate health care resources. The new center can be contacted around the clock, 365 days a year, by phone at 866-966-1020 and by e-mail at resources@dcoeoutreach.org.

Emergency Response Preparedness Self Assessment Instrument

The NASDDDS Emergency Response Preparedness Self Assessment Instrument was developed by the National Association of State Directors in collaboration with the Research and Training Center (RTC), Institute on Community Integration (ICI) at the University of Minnesota (UMN). Initiated following the Gulf Coast Hurricane disasters in 2005, the self assessment tool is designed to assist state developmental disabilities officials evaluate the extent to which their existing preparedness plans address the unique characteristics and needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities during periods of emergency or disaster.

ServiceLink Resource Center Adult Abuse Referral Protocols and Requirements

The ADRCs in New Hampshire, called the ServiceLink Resource Centers, or SLRCs, use these protocols for referring cases of self-neglect to Adult Protective Services (APS) through the Bureau of Elderly & Adult Services (BEAS).
